If you see the error message 'The target principal name is incorrect. Cannot generate SSPI context' when running a PowerBI report, you need to update your SQL credentials. This guide shows you how to resolve this issue.

This error occurs in DeltaWMS version 8 and later.

Update your SQL credentials

To fix this error, follow these steps:

  1. Go to the Power Query Editor window, or click the three-dot menu on the right-hand side, then click Edit Query.

  2. Click Data Source Settings from the ribbon menu.

  3. In the Data Source Settings window, select the affected data source, then click Edit Permissions.

  4. In the Edit Permissions window, under Credentials, click Edit.

  5. Select Database, then enter your SQL credentials.

  6. Click Save, then refresh all data.

Your PowerBI report will now run successfully.
